Drills and Drivers - What's the Impact?

What is the difference between drills and drivers?

Drills (aka Drill Drivers) are designed for light screw driving, but mostly for boring holes using a drill bit.   Impacts, or Impact Drivers are designed with quick bursts and a high level of force and torque to provide fast and efficient screw driving into a variety of surfaces within seconds.   The main difference between the Impact and the Drill is essentially power and rotational action.

What is a power drill used for?

Making holes in wood, metal, or plastic. Or driving screws.

I need to drill into concrete, what type of drill should I use?

Hammer Drill offers the force and torque needed to push through concrete.  Make sure you pair that with a concrete drill bit.

What drill is best for home use?

A drill driver should be sufficient for home use depending on the function that you wish to use it for.  If you do a lot of DIY projects inside your home you might want to consider investing in an impact driver which will speed up the efficiency of your efforts.  If you do a lot of work outside, near and around concrete and harder surfaces, you may need a hammer drill which has the force to push through concrete.

What is the best brand of drill?

That depends on your desired use.   Festool, Makita, and Milwaukee for example are all  excellent choices for the professional tradesperson.  DeWalt is an excellent brand for household and DIY projects.   We offer dozens of top quality drill brands from trusted manufacturers all around the world.

What is a battery platform?

Cordless drills and drivers are powered by specially designed batteries that fit within a brand’s collection.   A battery platform simply means a single battery style that you can use with any tool in the same line.   For example Milwaukee has three battery platforms - M12, M18, MX FUEL, and each of these have a different level of power and family of tools that they are compatible with.   We recommend that you choose a battery platform and build your power tool collection around it.  That way you don’t have to buy, maintain, and transport different batteries for your cordless tools.
