Digital Multimeters

Digital Multimeters for Electricians and HVAC

A digital multimeter measures voltage, current, and resistance for troubleshooting circuits, motors, and controls. This collection is mostly Klein Tools, from the manual-ranging MM300 and MM325 to auto-ranging MM400, MM420, and MM500 meters, the MM700 and MM720 1000V TRMS meters, and electrician's and HVAC models from the MM1000 to MM6000. Milwaukee 2216-20 and 2217-20 meters are offered standard or with NIST certification. Klein test kits add a non-contact voltage tester and receptacle tester.

What to Look For

  • Auto or manual ranging. Auto-ranging meters pick the scale for you. Manual-ranging models like the MM300 cost less and suit simple checks.
  • True RMS. TRMS meters read accurately on motors, drives, and other non-sine loads common in HVAC work.
  • Voltage rating. Choose 1000V models for industrial and solar work. 600V meters cover most residential circuits.
  • Calibration. NIST versions ship with a calibration certificate for jobs that require documented accuracy.

Digital Multimeters FAQ

Multimeter or clamp meter?

A multimeter measures current by placing the leads in the circuit, which suits low current and electronics. A clamp meter reads current around a conductor without breaking the circuit. Many electricians carry both.

What does low impedance mode do?

Low impedance (LoZ) mode, found on meters like the Klein MM700, helps filter out ghost voltage that can show up on unused wires, so you see whether a circuit is actually live.
