Face Masks and Respirators: Choosing a Protection Level

Face masks and respiratory protection here fall into three groups. Milwaukee 2-layer and 3-layer performance face masks are washable fabric face coverings in red and gray, sold singly and in 3- and 10-packs. KN95 disposable masks come in 1, 5, 10, 18, and 20 packs. For dust and particulates, the Klein P100 half-mask respirator and the Stealth P3 half face masks use replaceable filters, with replacement filters and a storage case listed.

What to Look For

  • Fabric masks. Comfortable for general use and light dust. They are not respirators.
  • Disposable masks. KN95 masks are single-use filtering masks for short tasks.
  • Half-mask respirators. P100 and P3 filters are high-efficiency particulate filters for sanding, cutting, and demolition dust.
  • Fit. A respirator only works if it seals. Klein offers S/M and M/L, and Stealth offers men's and women's sizes.

Face Masks / Respiratory Protection FAQ

What mask should I wear for sanding and cutting dust?

Use a half-mask respirator with P100 or P3 filters for fine dust from sanding, drywall, and masonry cutting. Pair it with dust extraction at the tool. Fabric face masks are not meant for this job.

When should I replace respirator filters?

Replace particulate filters when breathing gets harder, when they are damaged or soiled, or as the maker's instructions direct. Keep spares on hand. Klein sells P100 replacement filters in a 2-pack.
