Linesman Pliers
Choosing Lineman's Pliers
Lineman's pliers grip, twist, and cut wire in one tool, which makes them the core plier for electricians. This collection includes Milwaukee MT500 and MT550 pliers made in the USA, with crimper, bolt cutter, and thread cleaner versions, plus 1000V insulated and high leverage models. Knipex offers high leverage New England head pliers with fish tape puller and crimper, 1000V insulated, and tethered versions. Wiha, Klein, and Irwin VISE-GRIP LP4 and LP8 round out the range.
What to Look For
- High leverage. A rivet set closer to the jaw adds cutting force on heavy wire.
- Extra features. Crimpers, fish tape pullers, bolt cutters, and thread cleaners save carrying separate tools.
- Insulated. 1000V insulated models are for work near energized conductors.
- Tether point. Tethered versions attach to a lanyard for work at height.
The Tool Nut has sold lineman's pliers as an authorized dealer since 1994. Orders get free shipping on most orders and earn rewards points on every purchase.
Linesman Pliers FAQ
Comfort grip or dipped grip?
Dipped grips are thin and fit a tool pouch. Comfort grips are thicker and cushion the hand during long days of cutting and twisting. Milwaukee sells the MT500 dipped and MT550 comfort grip side by side.
Are 9-inch and 9-1/2-inch pliers different?
Longer handles give more leverage for cutting. Most models here are 9 or 9-1/2 inches. Irwin also offers a compact 4-3/4-inch LP4 for light work.
