Planer Guides for Handheld Planers

Planer guides keep a handheld planer square to the edge and control how wide and deep it cuts. Six of the seven guides in this collection are Makita: four guide rules, a bevel guide, and a depth guide. The seventh is the Festool parallel guide side fence for the HLC 82 cordless planer. Use them for rebates, chamfers, and edge work on doors and trim.

What to Look For

  • Planer model. Makita guide rules are made for specific planer bodies. Check the part number against your tool manual.
  • Guide type. A guide rule sets rebate width. A depth guide limits rebate depth. A bevel guide holds a set angle for chamfers.
  • Brand. The Festool 578105 fence fits only the HLC 82.

Planer Guides FAQ

Do I need a guide to plane a door edge?

A guide rule helps keep the planer square to the face so the edge stays true along its length. For a back bevel on a door edge, use a bevel guide set to the angle you want.

How do I know which Makita guide fits my planer?

Look up the planer's parts list or manual and match the part number, such as 165581-2 or 123060-6. Makita uses different guides across its planer models.
