Router Collets

Router Collets and Shaper Collets by Shank Size

A collet clamps the bit shank inside the router, and a worn or wrong-size collet is a common cause of bit slip and runout. This collection spans several brands. Festool collets cover 1/4-inch, 3/8-inch, 1/2-inch, 6mm, 8mm, and 12mm for its OF routers. Makita lists 1/4-inch, 3/8-inch, and 1/2-inch collets plus a 3/8-inch sleeve. Milwaukee and Bosch offer 1/4-inch self-releasing collets. Shaper Tools has 1/8-inch and 8mm collets and 5-piece collet kits. Powermatic and Jet sell 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch collets for their shapers.

What to Look For

  • Exact shank size. Match the collet to the bit shank. Never shim a small shank into a larger collet.
  • Router or shaper body. Collets are made for specific machines. Check that your model is named.
  • Self-releasing design. Self-releasing collets pop the bit free as you loosen the nut, so bits do not stick.
  • Replace on wear. Replace a collet that marks shanks or lets bits creep during a cut.

Buy router collets from The Tool Nut, an authorized dealer since 1994, with free shipping on most orders and rewards points redeemable on every brand we carry.

Router Collets FAQ

Can a 1/2-inch router run 1/4-inch bits?

Yes, with a 1/4-inch collet or a reducer sleeve made for that router. Many full-size routers ship with both sizes. Do not wrap tape or shims around a shank to make it fit.

How often should a collet be replaced?

There is no set interval. Replace it when bits slip, shanks show scoring, or the collet is cracked or bell-mouthed. Clean dust and pitch out of the collet and nut regularly to extend its life.
