Wood Finishing Oils and Surface Prep Supplies

This surface preparation collection currently centers on finishing the wood once it is sanded. Festool SurFix oils come in Heavy Duty, One Step, and Outdoor versions, sold as 0.3-liter applicators with 0.3-liter and 5-liter refills, plus StickFix applicator sponges and microfiber cloths. Odie's Oil adds its Original Oil, Wood Butter, Wax, and Dark versions, Super Penetrating Oil, Safer Solvent, cleaning concentrate, and Mr. Cornwall's pigments for tinting.

What to Look For

  • Interior or exterior. Use Festool Outdoor Oil for exterior wood. Heavy Duty and One Step oils suit interior pieces.
  • Application system. SurFix applicators meter oil onto the surface. Refills cut cost on repeat jobs.
  • Color. Odie's Dark finishes and pigments darken or tint the wood as you finish.
  • Prep. Sand evenly to your final grit and remove all dust before oiling.

Surface Preparation FAQ

How should I prep wood before an oil finish?

Sand with each grit in sequence to the final grit the finish maker recommends, then remove dust with a vacuum and a clean cloth. Oil highlights scratches, so check the surface under raking light first.

Odie's Oil or Festool SurFix?

Both are oil finishes for wood. SurFix comes in applicator bottles with 0.3-liter and 5-liter refills for shop volume. Odie's comes in jars, with matching cleaners, solvents, and pigments.
