Vises

Bench, Drill Press, and Mechanics Vises

Wilton makes nearly every vise in this collection, so the choice comes down to style. Drill press vises include low-profile models from 3 to 8 inches, 4- and 8-inch cross slide vises, 3- and 4-inch cradle style angle vises, and a 4-inch industrial vise. Bench vises range from the clamp-on Super-Junior 2-1/2-inch and 4-inch swivel models to 5-inch general purpose, 6- and 8-inch mechanics vises, an 8-inch shop vise, and multi-purpose vises with a 360-degree rotating head. The ATV All-Terrain Vise mounts to a hitch with its bracket. Fein adds the VERSAMAG vise set, oversized jaws, and a welding plate.

What to Look For

  • Use. Bench vises hold work for filing and assembly. Drill press vises bolt to the table and hold parts square to the bit.
  • Jaw width. Wider jaws hold larger stock but need a sturdier bench.
  • Swivel and rotation. A swivel base turns the work toward you. A rotating head adds more angles.
  • Precision. Cross slide vises move work on two axes for light milling and spot drilling.

Vises FAQ

What size bench vise do I need?

A 4- to 5-inch vise suits most home shops and light repair. Choose 6 to 8 inches for heavy mechanical work and large stock, and mount it to a bench that can take the load.

Do I need a drill press vise?

Yes for small or metal parts. Holding work by hand on a drill press is unsafe if the bit grabs. A low-profile vise keeps the part close to the table.
