What to Look For
- Material. Spiral cut-out tools are for drywall and paneling. Cut off tools with abrasive wheels handle metal and tile.
- Dust collection. AWS capable and shrouded models connect to a dust extractor.
- Size. 12V rotary tools fit in a pouch for detail work. 18V and 20V tools handle longer cuts.

Cut-Out Tools FAQ
Cut-out tool or oscillating multi-tool for drywall?
A spiral cut-out tool follows the edge of a box or vent fast and makes curved cuts easily. An oscillating multi-tool makes straight plunge cuts and flush cuts. Drywall hangers usually reach for the cut-out tool.
What is a compact cut off tool for?
It runs a small 3-inch wheel to cut bolts, threaded rod, rebar, sheet metal, and tile where a full grinder is too big. It is not a drywall tool.
