DeWALT Marking Tools
DeWALT Chalk Reels, Chalk, and Marking Crayons
DeWALT marking tools snap straight lines and mark materials on framing, roofing, concrete, and steel jobs. This collection includes chalk reels in compact, standard, premium, large capacity, and cast aluminum versions, plus geared 3:1 and 6:1 reels. Refill chalk comes in 8 oz. bottles and 2.5 lb. and 5 lb. containers in blue, red, black, white, violet, and high-visibility orange, with permanent red options. Red, blue, and yellow marking crayons round it out.
What to Look For
- Rewind speed. Geared reels like the 3:1 and 6:1 models pull the line back faster than a standard reel.
- Reel body. Cast aluminum reels stand up to drops on site. Compact reels fit a pouch.
- Chalk color. Blue and white are easy to clean off. Red, black, and permanent chalk hold up to weather and foot traffic but are hard to remove.
- Kit or reel only. Reel kits include chalk, so you can snap lines out of the box.

DeWALT Marking Tools FAQ
When should I use permanent chalk?
Use permanent red chalk for lines that must survive rain and traffic, such as on roof decks and concrete slabs. Avoid it on finished surfaces. For interior layout you plan to clean off, use blue or white chalk.
What does 3:1 or 6:1 mean on a chalk reel?
It is the gear ratio of the rewind crank. A 6:1 reel pulls in more line per turn than a 3:1 reel, which saves time on long snaps.
