Drywall Sanders

Drywall Sanders for Walls and Ceilings

Drywall sanders put a large, flexible pad on a long reach so you can sand joint compound on walls and ceilings without a ladder for every pass. Festool leads this collection with PLANEX, PLANEX easy, and PLANEX LHS 2 sanders, sold alone or in sets with abrasives and CT 36 dust extractors. Other 9-inch options include the DeWALT 20V MAX cordless and corded DWE7800, the Makita 18V LXT AWS capable sander, Bosch, Porter Cable, Flex Giraffe models, and the Mirka LEROS-S kit with a HEPA extractor.

What to Look For

  • Dust control. Drywall dust is very fine. Pair the sander with an extractor, or buy a kit that includes one.
  • Cordless or corded. Cordless DeWALT and Makita sanders skip the cord. Corded models suit full-day production sanding.
  • Reach and head. Long-reach heads cover ceilings. Shorter models are easier to control on walls and patches.
  • Kit contents. Starter and value sets add abrasives and an extractor in one purchase.

Drywall Sanders FAQ

Do I need a dust extractor with a drywall sander?

Yes for most work. Drywall sanders are designed to pull dust through the pad, and an extractor with a fine filter keeps it out of the room. Several Festool, Mirka, and Makita kits here include one.

Which pad should I use on fresh joint compound?

Softer pads follow uneven surfaces and are gentler on fresh mud. Festool offers PLANEX models with soft and ultra-soft pads for that reason.
