Metalworking Saws
Metal Cutting Circular Saws
Metal cutting circular saws use a carbide blade at low RPM to cut steel stud, strut, conduit, and sheet with cool, burr-light edges. Cordless options include Milwaukee M18 FUEL 5-3/8 and 8 inch saws, the DeWALT 20V MAX XR 7-1/4 inch, Makita 40V max XGT 7-1/4 inch with chip collector, Makita 18V 5-3/8 and 5-7/8 inch saws, and Bosch 18V 5-3/8 inch. Corded choices include Fein Slugger saws in 7-1/4, 9, and 14 inch sizes and the SKIL 8 inch worm drive for metal.
What to Look For
- Blade size. Smaller 5-3/8 inch saws suit strut and conduit one handed; 7-1/4 and 8 inch saws cut thicker plate and angle.
- Chip control. Chip collectors catch hot chips, which keeps the floor and the cut area cleaner.
- Power source. Cordless saws work in ceilings and on lifts. Corded Fein and SKIL saws suit the fab bench.
- Blade match. Use the dedicated metal cutting blade for the saw; wood blades are not built for steel.

Metalworking Saws FAQ
Metal cutting saw or abrasive chop saw?
A carbide metal cutting saw leaves a cleaner edge with little heat and fewer sparks than an abrasive wheel. The Fein 14-inch Slugger brings that approach to a chop saw format for bench cutting.
Can I use a metal cutting saw on wood?
It is designed and geared for metal. For wood, use a standard circular saw with a wood blade.
