Circular Saws

Choosing a Circular Saw

Circular saws break down lumber and sheet goods on site and in the shop. Rear handle saws include the Milwaukee M18 FUEL 2830, Makita 18V LXT X2 (36V) XSR01PT, and Makita 40V max XGT models in 7-1/4 and 10-1/4 inch. Sidewinders range from the DeWALT ATOMIC 4-1/2 inch and Milwaukee M12 FUEL 5-3/8 inch to 6-1/2 and 7-1/4 inch DeWALT, Milwaukee, and Makita saws, plus the corded Makita 5007MGA. Plunge track saws from Festool and Makita, 7-1/4 inch blades, and a Kreg Accu-Cut track guide are here too.

What to Look For

  • Blade size. 7-1/4 inch is the framing standard. 6-1/2 inch and smaller saws are lighter for sheet goods and trim.
  • Rear handle or sidewinder. Rear handle saws give reach and line of sight for framing. Sidewinders are shorter and lighter.
  • Platform. Pick the battery you already own: M12, M18, 20V MAX, 18V LXT, or 40V max XGT.
  • Straight cuts. A track saw or a track guide gives cabinet-quality edges on plywood.

Circular Saws FAQ

Circular saw or track saw?

A circular saw is the fast, all-purpose choice for framing and rough cuts. A plunge track saw like the Festool TS 55 or Makita SP6000J1 rides a guide rail for splinter-free, straight cuts in plywood and finished panels.

Which blade should I put on a new circular saw?

A 24-tooth framing blade cuts dimensional lumber fast. Switch to a 40- or 60-tooth finish blade for plywood and trim. See 7-1/4-inch blades.
