Open End Wrenches

Open End Wrenches and Torque Wrench Inserts

Open end wrenches grip two flats of a nut or bolt, so they slide onto fasteners from the side where a box end cannot. Most of this collection is Wera open end inserts: the 7780 series for 14x18 mm torque wrench receivers in sizes from 13 to 41 mm, and the 7775 open ring inserts for 9x12 mm receivers. Hand wrenches include the Wera Joker 4-piece double open end set, a DeWALT 1-1/4-inch combination wrench, and the Milwaukee MAX BITE ratcheting combination wrench.

What to Look For

  • Insert receiver size. Match the 14x18 mm or 9x12 mm insert to the receiver on your torque wrench.
  • Open end or open ring. Open ring inserts like the 7775 wrap more of the nut for line fittings and flare nuts.
  • Grip design. The Wera Joker and Milwaukee MAX BITE open ends are shaped to hold the fastener and reduce rounding.

Open End Wrenches FAQ

What does the size code on a Wera 7780 insert mean?

In a listing like 14X18x22x61-mm, 14x18 is the receiver it fits, 22 is the wrench opening in millimeters, and the last number is the insert length. Pick the opening that matches your fastener.

When should I use an open end instead of a box end?

Use an open end when a pipe, hose, or line passes through the nut, or when you can only reach the fastener from the side. Use a box end for higher torque on a free bolt head.
