Screw Extractors

Screw Extractors for Stripped and Broken Fasteners

Screw extractors remove fasteners with stripped heads or snapped shanks. Most bite in reverse as you turn them out. This collection carries Bosch spiral flute and straight flute high-carbon steel extractors as singles and sets, Irwin HANSON spiral and multi-spline hex head extractors, Knipex double edged extractors in sizes 1 to 7, the Milwaukee 4-piece M2 steel set, the Vega impact rated double-sided set, and Prazi GRABIT. The Irwin 117-piece kit adds taps, dies, and drill bits.

What to Look For

  • Fastener size. Pick the extractor sized to the screw or bolt so it grips without splitting the shank.
  • Flute style. Spiral flutes wedge in as they turn. Straight flutes put less outward force on thin-walled fasteners.
  • Drive. Double-sided bits drill and extract on one tool. Impact rated sets run in a driver.
  • Set or single. Sets cover a range of sizes. Buy singles to replace the size you use most.

Screw Extractors FAQ

How do I use a screw extractor?

Center punch the screw, drill a pilot hole with the size the extractor calls for, then turn the extractor counterclockwise. Double-sided styles like the Vega and Knipex sets cut the pilot with one end and extract with the other.

Spiral or straight flute?

Spiral flute extractors grip hard as they thread in and work well on screws. Straight flute extractors spread less force, which lowers the risk of cracking a hardened or thin fastener.
