Scroll Saws

Choosing a Scroll Saw

Scroll saws cut tight curves, inside cutouts, fretwork, and intarsia with a thin reciprocating blade. This collection has twelve bench and stand-mounted saws in 16", 18", 20", and 22" sizes. Choices include the Jet JWSS-18 and JWSS-22 with stand or foot switch options, the DeWALT DW788 20" variable-speed saw, Delta 40-694, Shop Fox W1713, W1870, and W1872, Rikon 10-600VS, Rockwell RK7315, and SKIL SS9503.

What to Look For

  • Throat size. The size in inches is the throat depth, which sets the widest panel you can turn to reach the center.
  • Variable speed. Slow speeds help in hardwood, plastic, and thin metal. Faster speeds cut softwood quickly.
  • Foot switch. A foot switch keeps both hands on the work when you stop to thread a blade through a hole.
  • Stand and lighting. A stand sets a comfortable height. A lamp or LED, as on the Rikon and Shop Fox W1870, helps you follow fine lines.

Scroll Saws FAQ

Scroll saw or band saw?

A scroll saw cuts much tighter curves and inside cutouts, since you can thread the blade through a drilled hole. A band saw cuts thicker stock faster and resaws boards, but cannot make interior cuts.

What size scroll saw do I need?

A 16" saw handles most crafts, signs, and puzzles. Choose 18" to 22" for larger panels and wall art.
