Square Drive Screwdrivers

Square Recess Screwdrivers

Square drive screwdrivers fit square recess screws found in electrical devices, cabinetry, and trim. Milwaukee makes up most of this collection: cushion grip drivers in No. 1, 2, and 3, 1000V insulated versions, MT-series drivers made in the USA, 11-in-1 multi-bit drivers, and 8-piece kits with square tips. Klein adds insulated square recess drivers, a 4-piece square set, and a 2-in-1 flip-blade driver. Wiha brings insulated sets that pair square tips with slotted and Phillips.

What to Look For

  • Tip size. No. 2 drives most electrical and construction screws. Keep a No. 1 and No. 3 for small and large heads.
  • Insulation. 1000V insulated drivers from Milwaukee, Klein, and Wiha are rated for work near live circuits.
  • Multi-bit or fixed. Multi-bit drivers save pocket space. Fixed drivers are stiffer and reach deeper.

Square Drive Screwdrivers FAQ

Why do electricians use square drive?

Many receptacles and switches use combination screws that accept square drive. The square tip seats firmly, so the screw stays on the driver and resists stripping.

Do I need an insulated square driver?

If you work in panels or boxes that could be energized, yes. For trim and cabinet work, a cushion grip driver is lighter and less expensive.
