Squares

Squares for Framing, Layout, and Woodworking

Squares check and mark 90-degree angles, and many also lay out rafters, stairs, and miters. Woodpeckers precision squares lead this collection: the 1281 12 x 8-inch square in inch and metric, 641 and 851 squares, T-squares in 12, 24, and 32 inches and 600 mm, triangle sets, a mini square, the 3D Multi-Marking Square, and a stair tread and shelf gauge. Milwaukee covers trim, rafter, magnetic rafter, and 16 x 24-inch framing squares. Stiletto and Empire add a carpenter square and combination squares.

What to Look For

  • Job type. Rafter and framing squares suit carpentry. Precision squares suit machine setup and joinery.
  • Size. Small squares fit in an apron. 24- and 32-inch T-squares mark across sheet goods.
  • Adjustability. Combination squares slide to set depths and mark parallel lines.
  • Scale. Metric versions of Woodpeckers squares serve shops working in millimeters.

Squares FAQ

Rafter square or combination square?

A rafter square is a fast guide for circular saw crosscuts and has scales for roof and stair angles. A combination square is for marking depths, checking inside corners, and finer layout.

How do I check if a square is accurate?

Draw a line along the blade from a straight edge, flip the square over, and draw again from the same point. If the lines do not match, the square is off by half the gap.
