Collection: Measuring Tools

Measuring tools keep every cut, layout, and installation accurate, from tape measures and rules to squares and calipers. The Tool Nut carries measuring tools built for precision on the job site and in the shop. Browse the newest arrivals in our New Tools collection.

Levels, Squares, Tapes, and Precision Measuring Tools

Measuring tools decide whether a cabinet hangs plumb, a miter closes, and a wall lands where the plans say. This collection spans job site and shop work: squares from Woodpeckers, Milwaukee, and Stiletto, levels from Stabila, Milwaukee, Empire, and Festool, tape measures from Stanley and Festool, rules and straight edges, and calipers for fine fitting. Leveling helpers such as the DeWALT ToughSeries construction jack and the Winbag air shim are here too.

Squares

The squares range covers Woodpeckers precision woodworking squares, T squares in 12, 24, and 32 inch lengths, a 6 and 8 inch square combo, and precision triangles. For carpentry, look at Milwaukee trim and rafter squares and the Stiletto 7 inch carpenter square with level. See Woodpeckers squares.

Levels

Spirit levels include Stabila Type 196 two-piece sets and the 8 inch Type 80 AS, the Milwaukee REDSTICK 5-piece master set, the Empire eXT extendable box level, and the Festool LEYSYS level that fits a Systainer handle. Shop Stabila spirit levels.

Tape Measures

Pocket and job site tape measures include the Stanley PowerLock pocket tape with a diameter scale and the Festool 10 foot imperial and metric tape for shops that work in both. Also browse Tajima tape measures and Stabila tapes.

Rules and Straight Edges

Steel and aluminum rules handle layout that a tape cannot. Options include the Woodpeckers 36 inch aluminum straight edge rule and the Incra 6 inch precision marking T-rule for scribing lines at exact offsets. See Woodpeckers rules and folding rules.

Calipers

Use calipers to read stock thickness, tenon size, bit diameter, and hole depth more precisely than a rule. They are the tool for setting up planers, router bits, and joinery jigs to a known dimension.

Lasers and Distance Measurers

For long runs and layout across a room, a line laser such as the DeWALT DW087K projects horizontal and vertical lines. Browse laser levels, mounting brackets like the Milwaukee 360-degree laser bracket, and laser distance measurers.

Measuring Tools FAQ

What measuring tools should I buy first?

Start with a 25 foot class tape, a speed or combination square, and a 24 inch level. Add a 48 inch level for walls and doors, then precision squares or calipers as your work gets finer.

Spirit level or laser level?

A spirit level is fast and needs no batteries for checking a single surface. A laser level projects a reference line across a whole room, which is faster for cabinets, tile, and drop ceilings. Most trades own both.

Why buy a precision woodworking square?

A machined square such as the Woodpeckers models holds a true 90 degrees across its full length, so you can set table saw blades, jointer fences, and router tables accurately. A framing square is fine for rough work but less reliable for setup.

Do I need metric and imperial scales?

If you use European tools or plans, a dual scale tape like the Festool imperial and metric tape saves converting. Many guide rails and joinery systems are set in millimeters.
