Testers
Voltage, Outlet, and Cable Testers
Testers give a fast pass or fail answer on the jobsite. Most of this collection is Klein Tools: NCVT non-contact voltage pens from the NCVT-1 and NCVT1P to the NCVT3P with flashlight, the NCVT-4IR with an infrared thermometer, and the NCVT-6 with a laser distance meter. Outlet testers run from the RT100 and RT210 to the RT250 with LCD and the RT310 AFCI/GFCI tester. Klein also covers data and coax with the VDV512-058 Coax Explorer and a Scout Pro 3 cable installation kit. Milwaukee adds the 2223-20 and 2224-20 GFCI testers, and Wiha offers a Category IV voltage tester.
What to Look For
- What you test most. Voltage pens check for live wires, receptacle testers check outlet wiring, and VDV testers check data and coax runs.
- AFCI and GFCI checks. Pick a receptacle tester with a GFCI trip button, or the RT310 if you also verify AFCI circuits.
- Sensitivity range. Dual range pens detect low-voltage control wiring as well as standard line voltage.
- Extra functions. Built-in flashlights, IR thermometers, or laser measuring cut down what you carry.
Buy testers from The Tool Nut, an authorized dealer since 1994, with free shipping on most orders and rewards points on each purchase.
Testers FAQ
Is a tester kit worth it over a single tester?
For most electrical work, yes. Kits such as the Klein 69149P and 69355 combine a multimeter, a non-contact voltage tester, and a receptacle tester, which covers the three checks done most often on service calls.
Can a non-contact tester replace a contact test?
No. A non-contact pen is a quick screening tool. Before working on a circuit, confirm it is dead with a contact tester or multimeter as well.
