Block, Bench, and Specialty Hand Planes
This hand planes collection centers on Stanley and Woodpeckers. Stanley block planes include the No. 60-1/2 low angle, No. 9-1/2, 12-220 adjustable, RB5, and Bailey low angle models. Bench planes include the No. 4, No. 4 smoothing plane, Bailey 9-3/4 in. and 14 in. planes, and the No. 62 low angle jack. Specialty tools cover a bullnose rabbet plane, small trimming plane, flat base spokeshave, and Surform pocket plane. Woodpeckers EZ Edge corner planes cut 45-degree chamfers or 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4 in. radius edges.
What to Look For
- Plane size. Block planes trim end grain and edges one-handed. Bench and jack planes flatten and smooth boards.
- Bed angle. Low angle planes slice end grain and figured wood cleanly.
- Edge work. Corner planes break sharp edges to a set profile in a few strokes.
- Blades. Stanley replacement irons in 1-3/8 and 1-5/8 in. widths keep block planes cutting.
The Tool Nut, an authorized dealer since 1994, offers hand planes with free shipping on most orders and rewards points on every purchase.
Hand Planes FAQ
Which hand plane should I buy first?
A low angle block plane, such as the Stanley No. 60-1/2, handles chamfers, end grain, and fitting parts. Add a No. 4 smoothing plane next for surface work.
What does a Woodpeckers EZ Edge plane do?
It rides on two faces of a board and cuts a consistent chamfer or round-over on the corner. Choose the 45-degree chamfer or a 1/8, 3/16, or 1/4 in. radius, or the Deluxe Set for several profiles.
