The Klein Tools Smooth Retractable Chalk Reel, 50-Foot (CHLK50S) is a manually retracting chalk reel for snapping straight layout lines. This is a chalk line reel designed for creating chalk lines on jobsites: framing layout, conduit and strut runs, drywall, tile and flooring. Klein model CHLK50S carries 50 ft (15.2 m) of nylon line with a 4:1 gear ratio.

The 4:1 gear ratio is the headline. Each crank turn retracts 4 times as much line as a standard 1:1 reel, which adds up fast when you are snapping dozens of lines across a slab or a wall. A quick-release spool clutch button disengages the handle while you pull line out, so the crank is not spinning against your hand and payout is faster and more comfortable.

Chalk management is thought through. A chalk level window shows how much chalk is left without opening the reel, and the secure twist-lock top keeps chalk from spilling in your tool bag or pocket. The bottle-nesting design lets a chalk bottle seat into the fill opening for clean refills. The reel holds 2 oz (57 g) of chalk; chalk is not included.

The line hook nests flush against the reel body to eliminate tangling during transport while still anchoring securely on a variety of surfaces. A precisely engineered spool distributes chalk consistently along the full 50 ft line, so the end of the line snaps as crisp as the beginning.

The case is high-impact ABS with rubber grips, with a lanyard hole for tethering, and a removable belt clip lets you carry it on a belt or pocket, or take the clip off entirely. It measures about 4-7/16" x 2-13/16" x 2-1/4" (11.3 x 7.1 x 5.8 cm) and weighs 4.1 oz (116 g). Who should buy it: carpenters, electricians, drywall, tile and flooring installers, and anyone who snaps lines over long runs.
