Overview
The Klein Tools Mobile Thermal Imager for Android/iOS (TI223) turns a smartphone into a thermal imaging camera. This is a mobile thermal imager designed for troubleshooting hot and cold spots in electrical, HVAC, plumbing and building inspection work. It plugs into a USB-C iOS or Android phone, draws power from the phone, and weighs just 0.9 oz (26 g).
The sensor is a 19,200-pixel VOx microbolometer with thermal sensitivity under 50 mK at 77°F (25°C) and a spectral range of 8 to 14 μm. In practical terms, it resolves small temperature differences clearly enough to spot an overheating breaker, a loose lug, a missing patch of insulation or a leaking supply line inside a wall.
It measures from -4°F to 752°F (-20°C to 400°C) with accuracy of ±3.6°F (±2°C) or 2%, whichever is greater (not calibrated below 14°F / -10°C). Emissivity is adjustable from 0.01 to 0.99, which matters when you are reading shiny metal versus painted or matte surfaces. The field of view is 56° horizontal and 71° diagonal, wide enough to scan a full panel at close range.
Temperature modes are touch-screen driven: tap for a spot temperature, show the high and low points in the scene, or read the differential between two points. Temperature alarm options are available, and images display in Ironbow, Rainbow or Grayscale palettes. The imager captures still images (JPG) and video, including a time-lapse feature for documenting how a load or a system warms up over time.
The aluminum-housed imager is about 1-3/4" x 1-1/4" x 5/8" (4.5 x 3.1 x 1.6 cm) and fits phone cases up to 1/5" (about 5 mm) thick, so you do not have to strip the case off your phone to use it. A hard storage case with carabiner is included. Display resolution and memory depend on your phone, and the frame rate is under 9 Hz.
Who should buy it: electricians checking panels and connections, HVAC techs diagnosing duct and register issues, plumbers tracing hot water lines, home inspectors and facility techs who want thermal imaging without carrying another dedicated instrument.

Pro Tip
Set emissivity before you trust a number on bare copper, aluminum or bus bar. Shiny metal reflects heat and reads low; put a piece of electrical tape on the spot and measure the tape for a more honest reading.
