Overview
Klein Tools Chicago Grip for High-Strength Cables, 0.62-in. Capacity (1628-16)
The Klein Tools Chicago Grip for High-Strength Cables 0.62-Inch (model 1628-16) is a heavy-duty wire pulling grip for extra-high-strength (EHS) cable, aircraft cable, messenger and guy strand. This is a Chicago grip designed for high-load tensioning and sagging of strand from 0.31 to 0.62 in. (7.87 to 15.75 mm).
With a maximum safe load of 15,000 lb (6,803.9 kg), this is the grip for serious EHS work. The long 7-1/4 in. jaw spreads the clamping force over a lot of cable, and the smooth double V jaw grooves create four-point contact that resists slipping while keeping the strand straight in the jaw.
A locking handle holds the jaw open, which lets you hang the grip on a hot stick and place it without your hands near the line. That matters on energized work and on any job where you are reaching out from a bucket.
The grip is drop-forged steel, machined and heat treated. Klein hand inspects each unit, actuates it for function and proof-tests it to rated load, and the 1628-16 is made in the USA. Expect a hefty tool at about 13.7 lb.
This grip belongs with transmission and distribution line crews, utility contractors and anyone tensioning high-strength guy and messenger strand where a lighter Haven's grip is not rated for the load.

Pro Tip
Match the grip to the cable diameter, not just the load. A 0.62 in. grip on undersized strand will not seat all four contact points of the double V jaw, and that is where slippage starts.
