Overview
Klein Tools Haven's Cable Grip, 0.5-in. Capacity (1604-20)
The Klein Tools Haven's Cable Grip 0.5-Inch Capacity (model 1604-20) is a wire pulling grip built for messenger strand, guy strand and extra-high-strength (EHS) cable. This is a cable grip designed for temporarily holding and tensioning strand during overhead line work where some conductor deformation is not a concern.
The knurled, curved jaw bites down over a 1/4 in. (6.35 mm) section of cable. That aggressive tooth pattern is what lets a compact grip hold up to 5,000 lb (2,268 kg) without slipping, but it also marks the strand. That trade-off is why Klein points this grip at messenger and guy work rather than finished conductors.
The body is drop-forged steel that is heat treated for strength. Klein hand inspects, actuates and pull-tests each grip to its rated load before it leaves the factory, and the 1604-20 is made in the USA.
At 8.75 in. long and about 2.2 lb, it is easy to carry on a belt or in a bucket and easy to handle at the top of a pole. There is no swing latch or spring on this model, which keeps the design simple and light.
This Haven's grip is a fit for linemen, telecom and CATV crews, and utility contractors who set and tension guy wire or messenger on a regular basis and want a dependable grip that is small enough to keep on the truck.

Pro Tip
Brush the jaw teeth clean before every pull. Klein calls this out for a reason: packed-in grit or ice is the number one cause of a grip slipping on strand, and a stiff brush takes ten seconds.
