Drill Bits - Wood

Wood Drill Bits

Wood drill bits use spurs, brad points, or screw tips to cut clean holes in lumber, plywood, and hardwood. This collection spans framing and fine work. Milwaukee SPEED FEED and Diablo auger bits bore deep holes for wiring and plumbing. Diablo spade bits include Demo Demon bits for nail-embedded wood. Fisch, Bosch, and Irwin Marples Forstner bits cut flat-bottomed holes. Festool CENTROTEC stubby bits, Irwin wood countersinks, Woodpeckers shelf pin drills, and a Milwaukee BIG HAWG arbor are here too.

What to Look For

  • Hole quality. Forstner and brad point bits give clean, accurate holes. Spade and auger bits trade finish for speed.
  • Depth. Auger bits up to 17-1/2 inches reach through stacked plates and joists.
  • Nails. Demo Demon and nail-embedded rated bits survive hidden fasteners in remodel work.
  • Shank. Hex shanks resist slipping in the chuck under high torque.

Drill Bits - Wood FAQ

Spade bit or auger bit?

Spade bits are inexpensive and fast for a few holes. Auger and SPEED FEED bits pull themselves through the wood, which takes less effort when boring many holes through studs and joists.

How do I stop tear-out when drilling wood?

Use a brad point or Forstner bit, clamp a scrap block behind the workpiece, and slow down as the bit exits. A drilling jig keeps the bit square for repeat holes.
