Countersinks
Countersink Bits and Sets for Flush Screw Heads
A countersink cuts a cone at the top of a pilot hole so a flat-head screw sits flush or below the surface. Snappy Tools makes up most of this collection, with single countersinks sized by pilot drill and depth, Gold Screw and trim screw countersinks, 82 degree and tapered sets, and kits with quick change drills. Festool offers Centrotec CE countersink drill bits in 3.5mm and 4.5mm plus pilotless countersinks. DeWALT sells a 3-piece set for No. 6, 8, and 10 screws plus replacement drill bits, and Amana adds carbide tipped countersinks, including a Centrotec shank version.
What to Look For
- Screw size. Match the pilot drill to your screw gauge, such as No. 6, 8, or 10.
- Pilot or pilotless. Combination bits drill and countersink in one pass. Pilotless countersinks chamfer an existing hole.
- Cutter material. Carbide tipped countersinks stay sharp longer in hardwood and sheet goods.
- Shank. Choose quick change hex, round, or Festool Centrotec to match your chuck.

Countersinks FAQ
Why 82 degrees?
Most flat-head wood and machine screws sold in the US have an 82 degree head. An 82 degree countersink matches that angle so the head seats fully without crushing the wood.
How deep should I countersink?
For a flush finish, stop when the screw head sits level with the surface. To plug the hole later, go deeper so a wood plug can cover the head.
