Cable Strippers
Wire and Cable Strippers for Electricians
Cable strippers remove insulation cleanly so conductors land tight under a terminal. Hand strippers here include Knipex forged 20-10 AWG strippers, a 1000V insulated version, and PreciStrip16 and automatic strippers, Klein Katapult and self-adjusting strippers, Klein-Kurve combos, Irwin VISE-GRIP strippers, and Milwaukee automatic, self-adjusting, solid wire, and twisted pair strippers. For heavy building wire, the DeWALT 20V MAX XR cordless cable stripper and Milwaukee M18 kits for copper RHW / RHH / USE and aluminum THHN / XHHW strip by battery.
What to Look For
- Gauge range. Check the AWG range printed on the jaws, such as 20-10 AWG or 8-22 AWG, against the wire you run most.
- Manual or automatic. Automatic and self-adjusting strippers grip and strip in one squeeze, which speeds up repetitive terminations.
- Solid vs stranded. Some strippers are sized for solid wire only. Stranded wire needs a clean bite that will not nick strands.
- Large conductors. Battery cable strippers take the knife work out of stripping large feeder wire.

Cable Strippers FAQ
Which wire stripper should a new electrician buy first?
A forged 20-10 AWG stripper and cutter, like the Knipex 13 72 8 or a Klein-Kurve, handles most branch circuit work. Add an automatic stripper for production work and a twisted pair stripper for low voltage cable.
When does a cordless cable stripper make sense?
When you strip large copper or aluminum feeders often. The Milwaukee M18 and DeWALT 20V MAX XR cable strippers remove insulation from big conductors without hand knives, which saves time and reduces nicked conductors.
