Fixed Base Routers

Choosing a Fixed Base Router

Fixed base routers hold the bit at a set depth, which makes them steady for edge profiles and the go-to choice in a router table. This collection runs from compact tools to production motors. Mid-size 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 HP routers include the DeWALT DW616 and DW618, Bosch 1617EVS and MRF23EVS, Porter Cable 892, and Metabo HPT M12VCM. Table motors include the Kreg 3-1/4 HP SureSpeed, Triton TFBR001, Bora PM-6250, and Milwaukee 5625-20. The Makita 3709 trimmer and SKIL routers cover light work.

What to Look For

  • Horsepower. About 2 HP handles most edge work and joinery. Over 3 HP suits large panel bits and router tables.
  • Combo kits. PK kits such as the DW618PK and 1617EVSPK add a plunge base to the same motor.
  • Variable speed. Electronic variable speed drops the RPM for big panel and cove bits.
  • Collets. Routers with 1/4 and 1/2 inch collets run the widest range of bits.

Fixed Base Routers FAQ

Fixed base or combo kit?

If the router will live in a table or only cut edge profiles, a fixed base is enough. If you also cut mortises, stopped dadoes, or inlays, buy a combo kit with a plunge base. It costs less than two separate routers.

What router works best in a router table?

Choose a 3 HP class motor with variable speed. The Kreg SureSpeed motor, Triton TFBR001, Bora PM-6250, and Milwaukee 5625-20 are common choices for that role. Pair one with a router table.
