Trim / Laminate Routers

Compact Trim and Laminate Routers

Trim routers are small one-hand routers that use 1/4-inch bits. They flush-trim laminate and edge banding, round over edges, cut hinge mortises, and handle light joinery. This collection includes corded models from DeWALT (4.5 amp single speed and 5.6 amp variable speed laminate trimmers), Makita (3709 fixed base trimmer), Kreg (1-1/4 HP PRSPR125), and Triton (TMNRTR). Cordless choices are the Kreg 20V Ionic Drive trim router, tool only or with a 2.0Ah battery and charger, and the Metabo HPT 18V M1808DAQ4 and M1808DAQ4M.

What to Look For

  • Speed control. Variable speed lets you slow down for larger bits and burn-prone woods.
  • Cord or battery. Cordless trimmers are easy to handle on installs. Corded models run all day in the shop.
  • Bases. Check which bases and guides are available, such as offset or plunge bases.

Trim / Laminate Routers FAQ

Can a trim router replace a full-size router?

For edge work and small profiles, often yes. For large bits, deep dadoes, or router table work, a full-size fixed base or plunge router is the right tool.

What bit shank do trim routers use?

Most use 1/4-inch shank bits, as listed for these models. The Triton TMNRTR also lists an 8 mm collet option.
