Domino, Plate, Pocket-Hole, and Dowel Joiners Compared

Joiners in this collection fall into four groups. Festool Domino machines lead: the DF 500 in Q, RQ, and Plus sets, the cordless 18V DFC 500, and the DF 700 XL for larger work. Plate and biscuit joiners come from Makita (XJP03Z 18V LXT and PJ7000 corded), DeWALT (DCW682B 20V MAX and DW682K), and Porter Cable (557 kit). Kreg offers the Rebel pocket-hole joiner and the Edge loose tenon joiner on 20V Ionic batteries. Triton adds the TDJ600 dowelling joiner.

What to Look For

  • Joint strength. Loose tenons and dowels add strength. Biscuits mainly align parts during glue-up.
  • Cordless or corded. Festool, Makita, DeWALT, and Kreg all offer battery models. Check which platform you already own.
  • Machine size. The DF 700 XL handles thicker stock and larger tenons than the DF 500.
  • Set or tool only. Sets add cases and accessories. Some Domino bundles include a tenon assortment.

Joiners FAQ

Domino or biscuit joiner?

Choose a Domino for furniture, frames, and doors where the joint carries load. Choose a biscuit joiner for edge-gluing panels and aligning case parts, where the glue line does most of the work.

DF 500 or DF 700 XL?

The DF 500 suits cabinets, face frames, and most furniture. The DF 700 XL cuts larger mortises for thick stock such as tables, beds, and doors. Many shops start with the DF 500.
