Router / Shapers
Router Size Classes: Compact, Mid-Size, and Full-Size
The quickest way to narrow this collection is by router size. Compact routers such as the Makita RT0701C, DeWALT DWP611 and DCW600B, Milwaukee M18 FUEL 2723, and Bosch GKF12V-25N palm edge router suit edge profiles and hinge work. Mid-size models such as the Festool OF 1010 R and OF 1400, Bosch 1617EVSPK, and DeWALT DCW620B handle dados and joinery. Full-size machines such as the Festool OF 2200, Makita RP2301FC, Milwaukee 5625-20, and Triton TRA001 drive large bits in a router table. Festool MFK 700 modular edge routers are here too.
What to Look For
- Collet capacity. Compact routers mostly take 1/4-inch shanks. Mid and full-size routers accept 1/2-inch bits for heavy profiles.
- Table use. For a router table, pick a full-size model and a lift or plate that fits it.
- Kit contents. Kits like the Makita RT0701CX7 and DeWALT DWP611PK add extra bases.

Routers and Shapers FAQ
Should my first router be compact or full-size?
A compact router is the easiest start for edges, round overs, and hinge mortises. If you plan to mount it in a table or run raised panel bits, a mid-size or full-size router with a 1/2-inch collet is the better first buy.
Router or shaper?
A router spins small bits at high speed and works handheld or in a table. A shaper is a stationary machine that spins larger cutters at lower speed for heavy production profiles.
