Sheet Sanders

Sheet Sanders: 1/4, 1/3, and 1/2 Sheet Models

Sheet sanders use a square or rectangular pad and run on cut sheets of paper, so they reach into inside corners a round pad cannot. Cordless choices include the DeWALT DCW200 20V MAX XR, Milwaukee M18 2649-20, Makita 18V LXT XOB02Z and XOB03Z, and Bosch 12V and 18V brushless models. Corded picks include Makita BO4556, BO3710, and BO4900V, Porter Cable 380 and 330 Speed-Bloc, and the Bosch OS50VC half-sheet. Mirka DEOS sanders add 3" x 4" and 2.75" x 8" pads.

What to Look For

  • Sheet size. A 1/4 sheet pad is compact for one-hand work. 1/3 and 1/2 sheet pads cover cabinet sides and panels faster.
  • Paper clamps. Clamp-style pads take any cut paper. Hook pads swap faster but need matching sheets.
  • Power source. Cordless sanders move room to room. Corded models run all day on long finishing jobs.
  • Pad shape. The Mirka DEOS 383X 2.75" x 8" pad suits long, narrow surfaces like auto body panels.

Sheet Sanders FAQ

Sheet sander or random orbit sander?

A sheet sander fits into corners and runs on low-cost cut paper, which suits cabinet and trim work. A random orbit sander removes material faster on open surfaces. Many shops own both.

Can I cut my own sheets?

Yes, on clamp-style pads. Cut a standard 9" x 11" sheet into quarters for 1/4 sheet sanders or thirds for 1/3 sheet sanders. Punch dust holes if the pad has them.
