Cordless Sanders
Cordless Random Orbit, Sheet, Belt, and Detail Sanders
Cordless sanders smooth wood, filler, and finishes without a cord catching on the workpiece. Random orbit models include the Milwaukee M18 and M18 FUEL 5-inch, M12 FUEL 6" and 3 in. detail, DeWALT 20V MAX XR 5-inch, Makita 18V LXT 5" and 40V max XGT 6", and Festool ETSC 125. For flat panels, there are 1/4-sheet sanders from Milwaukee, DeWALT, and Makita, plus the Festool RTSC 400. Belt sanders range from Milwaukee M12 FUEL bandfiles and an M18 FUEL 3-in. x 18-in. sander to DeWALT and Makita belt sanders, and DeWALT offers a 9" drywall sander.
What to Look For
- Sander type. Random orbit sanders remove stock without swirl marks. Sheet sanders reach corners. Belt sanders and bandfiles shape and remove fast.
- Pad size. 5" pads suit most work. 6" pads cover more area. 3" detail pads fit small parts.
- Dust control. Look for a dust port that connects to a vacuum or dust extractor.
- Hybrid power. The Festool ETSC 125 and RTSC 400 are hybrid sanders that run on battery or, with a mains adapter, on a cord.

Cordless Sanders FAQ
Which cordless sander should I buy first?
A 5-inch random orbit sander. It handles stock removal and finish sanding on most wood projects. Add a sheet sander for corners or a belt sander for heavy shaping later.
What is a bandfile?
A bandfile is a narrow belt sander on an arm. The Milwaukee M12 FUEL bandfiles use 1/2" x 18" and 3/8" x 13" belts to reach into slots and tight profiles, and to deburr metal.
