Stud Finders
Magnetic, Electronic, and Radar Stud Finders
Stud finders locate framing behind drywall so you can hang cabinets, TVs, and shelves on solid backing. Magnetic finders from Klein Tools, Kreg, and Studpop find the screws and nails in studs with no battery. Electronic sensors from Klein, DeWALT, and Stanley read density changes, and the Klein ESF150LL projects cross-line lasers. For deeper scans, the Bosch D-TECT 150 and D-TECT 200C wall/floor scanners use radar, and the Milwaukee M12 SUB-SCANNER and Bosch GMS 120 locate objects in walls and floors.
What to Look For
- Detection method. Magnetic finders locate fasteners. Electronic sensors find stud edges. Radar scanners see deeper and identify more materials.
- Depth. DeWALT lists 3/4-inch and 1-1/2-inch depth models.
- Marking. Lasers and built-in markers transfer the stud line to the wall.
- Power. Magnetic models need no batteries. The Milwaukee scanner runs on M12.

Stud Finders FAQ
Magnetic or electronic stud finder?
A magnetic finder is simple and reliable on drywall because it finds the fasteners. An electronic finder shows stud edges and centers but needs calibration on the wall surface.
When do I need a radar wall scanner?
When you drill or cut into concrete, tile, or walls that may hide pipes and wiring. Radar scanners like the Bosch D-TECT models detect more materials at greater depth than a basic stud sensor.
