Impact Wrenches
Cordless Impact Wrenches by Drive Size and Torque
Impact wrenches spin nuts and bolts off and on with rotational hammer blows. Milwaukee makes up most of this collection: M12 FUEL stubby wrenches in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2-inch drive, M12 FUEL right angle wrenches, an M12 impact wrench and tire inflator combo, and M18 FUEL compact, mid-torque, and high torque wrenches up to 1-inch D-handle models with ONE-KEY. DeWALT adds 20V MAX 1/2-inch wrenches with hog ring or detent pin anvils. Makita adds 18V LXT high torque and 4-speed mid-torque wrenches.
What to Look For
- Drive size. 3/8-inch for small fasteners, 1/2-inch for most automotive work, 3/4 and 1-inch for heavy equipment.
- Torque class. Compact and stubby for tight spaces, mid-torque for general use, high torque for seized and large bolts.
- Anvil type. Friction and hog rings allow quick socket changes. Detent pins lock sockets on.
- Form factor. Right angle and stubby models fit engine bays and under-dash work.

Impact Wrenches FAQ
Friction ring or detent pin anvil?
A friction or hog ring holds sockets by tension, so you can swap them by hand. A detent pin locks the socket in place, which is safer when working overhead or at height.
Which drive size should I buy first?
For cars and light trucks, start with a 1/2-inch mid-torque wrench. Add a 3/8-inch stubby or right angle for tight spaces. Move to 3/4 or 1-inch only for heavy equipment and large bolts.
