The DeWALT DCST972B 60V MAX 17-in Brushless Cordless Attachment Capable String Trimmer is a battery-powered outdoor power tool built for serious trimming, overgrowth cleanup, and multi-task yard maintenance. This is a string trimmer designed for trimming grass, weeds, and heavy overgrowth. Model Number: DCST972B. As a tool-only setup, it is aimed at users already on the DeWALT 60V MAX platform who want pro-level cutting reach and the flexibility to run attachments without being tied to gas.

What makes this trimmer matter is the mix of power and adaptability. DeWALT built it with a high-efficiency brushless motor to maximize runtime and product life while keeping enough output on tap for heavier trimming work. For the user, that translates into less time babying the tool in thick grass and more time actually clearing the area. The adjustable 15-inch to 17-inch cutting swath gives you a choice between control and coverage. Tight around posts, beds, and fencing, you can keep the head in closer. Out in open areas, open it up and cover more ground per pass.

Line setup is practical, too. The trimmer ships with 0.080-inch line prewound in the spool and is designed to run a dual-line setup in that size. It also works with DeWALT 0.095-inch line, which is worth knowing if you deal with heavier growth and want a tougher cutting setup. The bump-feed line advance system keeps fresh line moving without forcing you to stop and tear the head apart mid-job, and the quick-load spool makes respooling a lot less annoying than on older trimmer designs. If you trim often, that alone is a real quality-of-life upgrade.

DeWALT also gave this unit variable trigger control with hi/lo speed settings, which is one of those features that sounds basic until you use it all day. Low speed helps when you are doing finish work around landscaping, hardscapes, or lighter grass and want to save battery. High speed is there when the job shifts to taller grass, dense edges, or rougher cleanup. That kind of control is especially useful on a cordless string trimmer because it lets you manage both power and runtime based on the task instead of running flat out all the time.

The big differentiator here is the universal attachment capability. The DeWALT DCST972B 60V MAX 17-in Brushless Cordless Attachment Capable String Trimmer is not just a dedicated grass trimmer. It is a power head that can accept additional attachment pieces, including DeWALT attachments and other universal-style options. For anyone maintaining larger properties or doing varied outdoor work, that matters. One base unit can potentially cover trimming and other seasonal jobs, which is a smarter buy than stacking up separate standalone tools.

From a layout standpoint, this is a straight-shaft handheld string trimmer with a 45-inch shaft length. That setup typically gives better reach under fences, around shrubs, and along extended edges than a compact curved-shaft tool. At 9.5 lbs, it is not built as an ultra-light occasional-use trimmer. It is built more in the direction of users who want stronger cutting performance and attachment-capable versatility. The auxiliary handle and guard are included, which helps with control and debris management right out of the box.

Platform-wise, this is a cordless battery tool in the DeWALT 60V MAX system. It is sold as tool only, so the battery and charger are sold separately. That is the right setup for existing FlexVOLT users who already own compatible batteries and want to add the trimmer without paying again for power components they already have. If you are not already on the platform, just factor that into the buy. The upside is you are stepping into a higher-output battery system intended for heavier-duty cordless equipment.

This trimmer makes the most sense for property maintenance crews, landscapers, grounds workers, and homeowners with more than a small patch of grass to clean up. It is also a solid fit for users who want one cordless outdoor power head that can do more over time through attachments. If your needs are light edging around a tiny yard once every few weeks, this may be more tool than you need. If you want cordless convenience without giving up cutting path, brushless performance, and the option to expand into other outdoor tasks, this is where the DCST972B earns its keep.
