Overview
The Makita XFD17S1 18V LXT Brushless 1/2" Driver-Drill Kit is a cordless driver-drill designed for drilling and driving in wood, metal and plastic. The kit includes the XFD17Z driver-drill, one 18V LXT 3.0Ah battery (BL1830B), a charger and a tool bag. It's a compact, everyday drill with enough torque for real jobsite work and two modes: drilling and driving.
The Makita-built brushless motor delivers 580 in-lbs of max torque, which handles 1-1/2" bits in wood and 1/2" holes in steel. A variable 2-speed transmission gives you 0-500 RPM for spade bits, hole saws and long screws, and 0-1,900 RPM for fast pilot holes and twist bits.
The 20-position clutch lets you dial in torque for the fastener so drywall, cabinet and trim screws seat cleanly without stripping or overdriving. The 1/2" keyless chuck is engineered to reduce bit slippage and improve bit retention, so bits stay put when the drill loads up.
Size and weight are well balanced. At 6-9/16" long and 3.7 lbs with the included 3.0Ah battery, the XFD17 fits between studs and stays comfortable overhead. A rubberized soft grip and a single L.E.D. light round out the everyday-use features.
The brushless motor is electronically controlled to use battery energy efficiently, giving up to 50% more run time per charge than a brushed motor. Extreme Protection Technology (XPT) improves dust and water resistance, and Star Protection Computer Controls protect the tool and battery against overloading, over-discharging and overheating.
The XFD17 runs on Makita 18V LXT, the world's largest 18V cordless tool system, so the included battery and charger work with hundreds of other Makita tools.
Who should buy this: remodelers, installers, maintenance techs and DIYers who want a reliable brushless 1/2" drill with a battery and charger in the box. If you don't need hammer mode for masonry, this is the cleaner, simpler choice over a hammer drill.
