The Makita XSS02Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 6-1/2 Inch Circular Saw is a compact cordless jobsite saw built for wood cutting, ripping, and general construction work. This is a circular saw designed for fast, portable cutting in framing lumber, sheet goods, and remodel tasks. Model Number: XSS02Z. If you want Makita 18V mobility without stepping up to a larger saw, this one gives you practical cut capacity in a lighter package.

The big numbers here are what matter on the job. The Makita-built motor delivers 3,700 RPM, which gives this cordless circular saw the speed needed for cleaner, quicker cuts in common wood materials. A 6-1/2 inch blade and 2-1/4 inch max cutting capacity at 90 degrees let it cover a wide range of everyday cuts, and the 1-9/16 inch capacity at 45 degrees means it can cut 2x material on a bevel. That makes it useful for framing, decking, blocking, sheathing, and general trim support work where you need portability more than maximum blade size.

Makita kept the design straightforward and jobsite friendly. The precision-machined aluminum base is there for a reason: it helps the saw track smoothly and stay accurate, while also holding up better in rough conditions than a lighter-duty stamped setup. The top-handle layout gives you familiar sidewinder control, and the rubberized soft grip helps when you're making repeated cuts or working from awkward positions. There is also a flat motor housing design, which makes the tool more stable when you set it down for blade changes.

From a practical standpoint, this saw is built to reduce fatigue. It weighs 7.3 lbs with battery, which is light enough to carry around the site and easier to manage than bulkier cordless circular saws during repetitive work. The left-blade configuration also helps many users keep a clearer line of sight on the cut line, especially for right-handed operation. Add in the on-board blade wrench and spindle lock, and routine blade swaps are less of a hassle.

On the battery side, the Makita XSS02Z runs on the Makita 18V LXT platform and is compatible with Makita 18V Lithium-Ion batteries that have the Star symbol. That matters because the tool is equipped with Star Protection Computer Controls, which monitor for overload, over-discharge, and overheating. In real use, that means better protection for both tool and battery when you're pushing through longer rip cuts or working in tougher site conditions. Since this is a tool-only version, battery and charger are sold separately.

Who should buy it? This is a smart pick for carpenters, remodelers, maintenance crews, and serious DIY users already on the Makita 18V LXT battery platform who want a lighter circular saw for everyday cutting. It is especially useful if you value portability, clean handling, and enough capacity for common lumber cuts without carrying a heavier rear-handle or 7-1/4 inch model. If your work is mostly framing lumber, plywood, and general wood cutting, this saw lands in a very useful middle ground.
