Router Bits
Choosing the Right Router Bits
Router bits cut edge profiles, grooves, joints, and holes in wood and sheet goods. This collection includes Festool carbide (HW) bits on 8mm shanks for edge banding radius, flush trim, chamfer, V-groove, straight, spiral, dowel drilling, and Euro hinge boring. It also carries Freud straight, tongue and groove, and rail and stile bits, plus all-purpose router bit sets from Freud, Bosch, SKIL, and Timberline in 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch shanks.
What to Look For
- Shank size. Match the shank to your router collet: 1/4-inch, 1/2-inch, or 8mm. Larger shanks flex less on big profiles.
- Profile. Choose straight or spiral for dados, flush trim or radius for edges, and rail and stile sets for cabinet doors.
- Cutting material. Carbide stays sharp in plywood and MDF. HSS spiral bits suit softer materials.
- Bearing or no bearing. Bearing-guided bits follow an edge. Bits without a bearing need a fence, guide, or template.

Router Bits FAQ
Can I use Festool 8mm shank bits in my router?
Only with an 8mm collet. Festool routers are typically set up for 8mm shank bits, and many other routers can accept them with an 8mm collet. Never use a bit in a collet of a different size. See router collets.
Should I buy a router bit set or single bits?
A set gives a beginner the common profiles at once, such as straight, roundover, chamfer, and flush trim. Buy single bits for profiles you use daily or for specific jobs like hinge boring and rail and stile doors.
