Air Filtration

Shop Air Filtration Systems for Fine Dust

Air filtration systems hang from the ceiling or sit on a bench and pull fine dust out of the shop air that tools and dust collectors miss. This collection includes Jet AFS models from 850 to 1700 CFM, Powermatic PM1200 and PM1250 units, and Rikon models from 300 to 1100 CFM. It also lists Laguna D|Flux cyclone dust collectors, which capture dust at the machine rather than cleaning room air.

What to Look For

  • CFM vs. shop size. Multiply length, width, and ceiling height to get room volume. Higher CFM changes the air more times per hour.
  • Speed settings. Models range from 3-speed units to the 6-speed Jet AFS-1000C, so you can trade noise for airflow.
  • Remote and timer. The 1700 CFM Jet unit and the Rikon 62-400 list remote control, handy for a unit hung overhead.
  • Collector or cleaner. A cyclone collector handles chips at the source. An air cleaner handles what stays airborne. Most shops need both.

Air Filtration FAQ

Do I need air filtration if I have a dust collector?

Usually, yes. Dust collectors and extractors catch most debris at the tool, but the finest particles drift and stay airborne. An air filtration unit cycles the room air to pull them out over time.

Where should I mount an air filtration unit?

Hang it near the center of the dust-producing area and out of the way of lumber handling. Leave clear space at the intake and exhaust so air can circulate around the room.
