Grinder Fiber Discs

Choosing Grinder Fiber Discs for Metal

Grinder fiber discs are resin-bonded abrasive discs for aggressive metal removal: beveling, weld grinding, and stripping rust and scale. This collection includes Diablo aluminum oxide discs in 4, 4-1/2, 5, and 7 inch sizes from 24 to 80 grit, with bulk packs for shops. Mirka ceramic alumina discs, including Ceramic Supreme for stainless steel, run in 24 and 36 grit. Bosch X-Lock fiber discs come in 25-packs, and DeWALT offers 7-inch XP3 Quick Lock discs.

What to Look For

  • Grain. Aluminum oxide is a solid choice for mild steel. Ceramic grain cuts faster under pressure and suits stainless and harder alloys.
  • Grit. 24 and 36 grit hog off welds and bevels. 50 to 80 grit blends and preps for paint.
  • Mounting. Standard fiber discs need a backing pad. X-Lock and Quick Lock discs use their own mounting systems.
  • Size. Match the disc to the grinder and backing pad, from 4-inch to 7-inch.

Grinder Fiber Discs FAQ

Fiber disc or flap disc?

A fiber disc cuts faster and stays flat, so it is the pick for heavy removal and beveling. A flap disc grinds and blends in one step and leaves a smoother finish, but removes material more slowly.

Do X-Lock fiber discs fit a standard grinder?

X-Lock discs are made for the X-Lock mounting system. For a standard threaded-spindle grinder, choose a conventional fiber disc and a matching backing pad.
