Simpson Strong-Tie Straps

Picking the Right Simpson Strong-Tie Strap Tie

Simpson Strong-Tie straps tie framing members together across splices, top plates, and floor-to-floor joints. Flat ST strap ties run from 9 inches to just under 34 inches in 20, 16, and 14 gauge. MST and MSTI medium strap ties step up to 12 gauge, MSTA comes in 18 gauge, and the HRS heavy strap is 12 gauge. STHD strap-tie holdowns, including rim-joist versions, set into the foundation pour. RPS retrofit straps and the SM1 StrapMate holder round it out.

What to Look For

  • Length and gauge. The required length and gauge come from the plans or the connector load table, not guesswork.
  • Finish. Most straps are standard galvanized. ZMAX versions carry a heavier zinc coating for more corrosive exposures.
  • Retrofit or framing stage. RPS straps are built for retrofit work. STHD holdowns must be placed before concrete is poured.
  • Fasteners. Fill the holes the strap specifies with Simpson nails or SD connector screws.

Simpson Strong-Tie Straps FAQ

What is the difference between ST and MST straps?

ST straps here are lighter flat ties in 20, 16, and 14 gauge for plate splices and general tie-downs. MST and MSTI medium straps are 12 gauge for heavier loads. Use the strap your plans or the load table call for.

What does the SM1 StrapMate do?

It holds an STHD holdown or strap in position in the form so it stays put while concrete is placed and finished.
