Stationary Sanders

Drum, Belt, Disc, and Edge Sanders for the Shop

Stationary sanders flatten, shape, and smooth parts faster than handheld sanders. Drum sanders make up much of this collection: Jet JWDS 10-20 benchtop through 22-44 and 25-50 models, including an oscillating drum version, Supermax 16-32, 19-38, and 25-50, a Supermax 25-inch double drum, and the Powermatic PM2244. Edge sanders include the Jet OES-80CS and Laguna 6|89T. Belt/disc combos come from Jet, Rikon, Powermatic, and Laguna. Spindle sanders round it out.

What to Look For

  • Machine type. Drum sanders bring panels to thickness. Belt/disc and edge sanders shape parts. Spindle sanders smooth curves.
  • Capacity. Drum sander names list single-pass width and two-pass width.
  • Power. Check voltage. Larger machines like the Supermax double drum need 220V.
  • Dust collection. Drum sanders make fine dust. Plan a dust collector hookup.

Stationary Sanders FAQ

What does 19-38 mean on a drum sander?

It is an open-end drum sander that sands 19 inches wide in one pass and up to 38 inches wide by flipping the panel for a second pass.

Drum sander or planer?

A planer removes stock fast but can tear out figured grain. A drum sander removes less per pass and handles figured wood, glued-up panels, and thin parts more safely.
